Let’s fact it, a big bottle makes a statement. As Sir Winston Churchill claimed, ‘A magnum is the perfect size for two gentlemen to have over lunch…especially if one isn’t drinking.’
The big bottle format also happens to be widely accepted as the optimal size for fine wines to mature gracefully and evenly, so there is that, too – but who’s interested in practicality when a well-chosen, head turning magnum arrives? It’s the quintessential party conversation piece.
Join us for Big Bottle Saturdays to sample South Africa’s super-sized and grandest pours. Our resident cork puller will be welcoming a line-up of winemakers to showcase the aromas, textures and flavours that only ageing in large format can deliver.
Our first Big Bottle Saturday kicks off with Elgin-based Spioenkop Wines, and winemaker Koen Roose will be joining us to share his wine-making philosophy. Spioenkop produces wines that have finesse, balance, and purity, with the idiosyncratic character of the winemaker flowing through every bottle.
Join us for a glass on 29 May, from 2pm.
